In Game 2, the Yankees had one hit in the first eight innings. In Game 3, they had four hits in the first eight innings. These ninth-inning Yankees sure can score, but the games have been decided before then with the Yankees lineup disappearing for extended stretches. The Dodgers took a two-run lead before the home team had a turn to bat Monday night. The game felt over almost before it began.
Maybe this one should be more like a half checkmark, but we can at least give the Yankees some credit for getting a few hits and runs from the bottom of the order and not relying entirely on Juan Soto and Giancarlo Stanton to lead the offense. Granted, Stanton did have 40 percent of their hits in this game, but Anthony Volpe had his first hit of the series (he struck out in his other three at-bats) and Alex Verdugo hit a two-run home run with two outs in the ninth. I mean, at least the Yankees weren’t shut out. That’s good. Right?

If only the UI did a good job of keeping track of this stuff. It can be jarring to go from the flavourful event text to the abstract, soulless numbers that the UI boils them down to. It’s overwhelming, and it’s just not that informative. Every interaction is made a little worse because it necessitates faffing around in discrete, counterintuitive menus that drag you all over the screen. Even after winning my first campaign, I still found myself getting occasionally lost, and I still don’t know how to find crucial information on things like the spread of religion. The tutorial and encyclopaedia are also little help, choosing brevity and vagueness over clear instructions. There’s so much more context and clarity in the event text, so I wish Old World’s writers were a bit more involved in designing the interface, which could definitely benefit from their skills.

Old World can be vexing at first given how much more there is to manage on top of the usual 4X concerns we’ve gotten used to in the past decade or so, and the UI can feel cluttered as you’re trying to piece it all together. But crucially, none of that added complexity comes without added rewards. The richness and human element that mortal characters and noble families bring is well worth coming to grips with all of the extra mechanics they introduce. Limiting your ability to give orders not only cuts down on long turn times in the late game, but opens up new strategies for playing tall or making the most of a less than great start position. It’s a fine balancing act, and while Old World doesn’t really become a “Civ killer,” I don’t think it’s trying to be. For those who have the patience to master it, it’s a satisfying and deep 4X that could generate interesting stories for ages to come.
In Old World you don’t play a faction, you play a person with a name and a family, and just like Crusader Kings you go from there, having kids, making friends, forming relationships and guiding the fates of everyone around you. When you die, you start playing as your heir, and so on and so on until the game ends.
Skeleton Horse Archers are the outriders and scouts of the Tomb Kings army. These Undead horsemen are capable of tracking and hunting the foe through the shifting dunes and the open desert alike at a relentless pace.
