It’s important to note right away that most of what makes this game so good is that complexity. Steamforged Games have managed to incorporate almost every mechanic from the video game to some degree or another, from using the Scoutflies to carving and crafting. It’s much more limited in terms of weapon classes and monster variety of course, with only four hunter types and five monsters (with two using the same miniature), but there’s also a ton of replayability and the option to grind multiple hunts for materials just like the video game. The real witchcraft here is that it feels almost as thrilling.
Despite it being a few years old at this point, I couldn’t really find any official sales of it outside of the Kickstarter campaign, only scalpers selling it on ebay/mom+pop shops in Europe. Was this thing actually a Kickstarter exclusive with no intention to be sold outside of the campaign?? Despite it’s high price I’d be interested in picking up a “complete” edition with all of the expansions, if it were available.
You keep track of what you earn and find, including materials for crafting and potions of which you can only carry three for the whole party, regardless of how many are playing. This and the three-failure system carried over from the main franchise mean it can sometimes be more beneficial to play solo – it’s just not quite as much fun. If you do play with only one or two Hunters, though, the game allows you to bring a Palico that can provide a huge boost for a limited number of turns.
Monster Hunter World has a really good combat engine and an interesting crafting/upgrading system. Unfortunately, those are overshadowed by grinding for raw materials. It’s a fun experience and, especially using the arena mode where you gear up and go, you can get at least four unique and fun boss battles out of this box. Or if you like the grind, there’s a ton of content to work through.

The Dodgers held a parade from Los Angeles City Hall to L.A. Central Public Library along Grand Avenue followed by a celebration at Dodger Stadium on November 1, 2024, the birthday of former Dodgers star pitcher Fernando Valenzuela. Despite honoring the Dodgers as the 2024 World Series champions, fan tributes to Valenzuela were also considered to be a highlight of the November 1 celebrations.
