New world game
This was for a city’s tormented sports fans, who after most of the past 56 years could not have absorbed another body blow. This was for a franchise that until recently had a run of 18 miserable seasons without winning a playoff round and four years ago was humiliated and slapped by baseball’s lords for the worst international prospect signing scandal anybody had ever seen, forcing the front office to be flushed https://fotomodellek.com/. This was for Hank Aaron and Phil Niekro and William Bartholomay, who moved with this team from Milwaukee in 1966 and no doubt enjoyed this from their view, high above Houston, well north of the clouds.
As of Monday Oct. 21, re-sale tickets for Game 1 at Dodger Stadium ranged from around $2,000 for seats in the upper deck in right field to over $37,000 to sit right behind home plate, before taxes and fees.
There has not been a Fall Classic sweep since the Giants swept away the Tigers in 2012. The 11 consecutive World Series without a sweep is the second-longest stretch in history, behind a 12-year streak from 1977-88.
When asked about his opinion on LA’s next opponent and the task ahead, Ohtani said, “Two really good teams competing against each other. Obviously, Judge is a really good player, but so is (Juan) Soto and a lot of the players on the Yankees team.

Freeman, still nursing that sprained right ankle, went deep again, and this time he had the company of NLCS MVP Tommy Edman and All-Star Teoscar Hernández and the backing of 6 1/3 one-hit innings from Yamamoto. The party quieted when Ohtani went down, and the Yankees had everybody on the edge of their seats when they plated a run and loaded the bases in the ninth. But the Dodgers protected their home turf.
“We faced every adversity possible and we overcame every single one,” Freeman said, who won his second title after 2021 with Atlanta, and rebounded from a sprained ankle to homer in each of the first four Series games.
And so the Yankees, who brought their band of slugging superstars to the West Coast, head east with a daunting deficit against a Dodgers team that had been an out away from angst in the opener, yet is now two wins from a ring.

The matchup also features former MVP Award winners Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and Giancarlo Stanton, among a host of other big-name players. A competitive series will likely be the determining factor in terms of television ratings, but on paper, it looks like we’re in for a ton of fun.
When Buehler took the mound in the ninth inning, the Dodgers had taken advantage of a litany of Yankees mistakes to score five runs against a dominant Gerrit Cole in the top of the fifth and used back-to-back eighth-inning sacrifice flies by Gavin Lux and Mookie Betts to take their first lead. In the next half-inning, a tiring Blake Treinen had confronted a two-on, one-out situation and gotten out of it unscathed. Then Buehler came in and retired the bottom of the Yankees’ lineup in order, securing the Dodgers’ first championship since 2020 — and their first full-season title since 1988.
This is the Dodgers’ second title in five years — and their first in a full season since 1988. They will get even better as a coterie of pitchers return. The Yankees, meanwhile, will face the questions not only about how they blew the lead in Game 5 but whether Juan Soto — their best player all postseason — will return, as a jackpot awaits in free agency. — Jeff Passan
Game 5 world series 2024
Dave Roberts’s group fought its way out of a five-run hole, with the hosts’ help, and celebrated on the field in The Bronx in a dramatic, 7-6, Game 5 Yankees loss on Wednesday that was part heartbreaker and part self-inflicted head-shaker.
It has been a theme throughout the World Series and the postseason, and really the entire season. The Yankees are a talented team, for sure, but they’re also very sloppy, undisciplined, and fundamentally unsound. They run the bases poorly and to call them error-prone would be an understatement. The Yankees are simply terrible at the so-called little things.
And in this 7-6 victory, the Dodgers ushered in their champagne celebration the hard way, becoming the first team in a World Series-clinching win to come back from down five or more runs. They also became the first team in MLB postseason history to fall behind by five-plus runs, erase that deficit, fall behind again and yet still win the game.
As they watched Game 4, which aired at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning in Japan, Yasuo Sakamoto, 74, and his wife Keiko, 70, wore the Dodgers jerseys and hats they got when they visited Los Angeles this summer to see Ohtani play.
The Yankees also needed to be unique in order to have hopes of a comeback in this series. No team has ever erased a 3-0 deficit in the World Series before. No team has even forced a sixth game from such a hole.
