When the Reaping begins, the mayor gives a speech about the history of the Hunger Games and the districts. The area that the districts now exist in was once known as the United States, however, due to global crisis and changing weather patterns, the United States and all of North America went to war and eventually dissolved. Originally there were thirteen districts but the thirteenth rebelled and the Capitol’s crushing defeat of it was the impetus for the Hunger Games.
They go back to the Training Center and Katniss is kept alone for days while she recuperates. When she is let out, Haymitch warns her that she’s in danger. The Capitol took her stunt with the berries as an act of defiance, so she has to convince everyone that she was desperate at the thought of losing Peeta and not being rebellious, or even her family could be at risk. In their final interview, she’s reunited with Peeta, who lost his leg and now has a prosthetic. After, when Haymitch tells her she did great, Peeta wonders what he means, and Katniss explains everything, including the romance strategy during the Games. Peeta is angry and hurt, but as they arrive back in District 12, they hold hands one more time to greet the crowd and cameras.
The tributes are taken to the Capitol, where they meet the other tributes; their trainer, Haymitch; and their team of stylists led by Cinna, who befriends Katniss. Haymitch promises Peeta and Katniss that he will stay sober during their games to try to get them sponsors, who can send life-saving supplies to the tributes. Thanks to Cinna’s styling efforts, Katniss and Peeta become stars in the Capitol. The tributes then go to the training center, where they are assigned odds of winning. Katniss impresses and frightens the Gamemakers by shooting an arrow into their midst. During a televised interview prior to the games, Peeta tells host Caesar Flickerman that he is in love with Katniss, entrancing the audience by spinning a tragic love story.
The medicine cures Peeta, and they spend more time growing closer in the cave. Once the Gamemakers dry up their water supplies, they prepare themselves and head out to face Cato, the only other surviving tribute. But their main challenge turns out not to be Cato, but several wolf-man creatures unleashed by the Gamemakers, creatures reanimated from the corpses of dead tributes. Katniss and Peeta escape by climbing to higher ground, while the other tribute falls and is tortured by the creatures. Finally, Katniss kills the tribute with her arrow out of mercy.

This is the ultimate activity for students to get to know each other and is a nice fit for an “All About Me” lesson. Students have to fill up their boards with things that they think some students will answer yes to, but not everyone. For example, loves junk food, or plays soccer. I don’t know about you, but I prefer homemade play dough over store bought play dough! I love the texture of homemade play dough, and I like to add in essential oils to make it smell good, too! This activity is great because it gives students a chance to match uppercase & lowercase letters together. And remember, you don’t have to put out ALL the letters at once. Just start with 5-7 letters (3-4 they know well & the rest they’re learning) and have them match those up. (I also don’t recommend following the “Letter of the Week” routine.
