Game 5 world series 2024
Top of the first: Facing Yankees ace Gerrit Cole, Shohei Ohtani flied out to center field on the first pitch of the game. Mookie Betts grounded out to first base. Freddie Freeman flied out to left field.
11:12 p.m. — Ohtani then steps to the plate and Wells is called for catcher interference. The Yankees challenge and the play is upheld, walking Ohtani into bases loaded with one out and Betts on the board.
Bottom of the sixth: Facing Dodgers reliever Brusdar Graterol, Juan Soto drew his third walk of the game. Graterol then walked Aaron Judge, prompting a mound visit. Jazz Chisholm grounded into a force out at second base, putting runners on the corners.
At that point, Yankees manager Aaron Boone had no choice but to go to closer Luke Weaver. The season was on the line and he needed his best on the mound. Weaver threw 21 pitches in Game 4 and was pitching for the third straight day for the first time in 2024. Honestly, he did well to limit the damage to two runs. Gavin Lux and Betts brought the two runs home on sac flies.
For New York, Cole will take the mound for the second time this series as well. Despite the Game 1 loss, the Yankees ace pitched six strong innings, giving up just four hits and one earned run with four strikeouts and no walks. The rest of the lineup remains unchanged from Game 4.

Also, the decision to bring in Cortes was curious at best and baffling at worst. Cortes had not pitched since Sept. 18 because of a flexor strain and he was not on the ALDS or ALCS rosters, then Yankees manager Aaron Boone brought him into face three Hall of Famers — Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freeman — with the game on the line in the tenth inning. I mean, what?
In the top of the 10th inning, Jazz Chisholm Jr. small-balled the Yankees to the lead. He singled off top Dodgers reliever Blake Treinen, stole second and third, then scored on an RBI fielder’s choice from Anthony Volpe. It could have been a huge win for the Yankees, but it ended up being history for the Dodgers.
Amen to that. To live up to a working week’s worth of hype is no small feat. But the Dodgers and Yankees — the No. 1 seeds in the National and American Leagues who are clashing in the Fall Classic for the first time in 43 years — played a Game 1 very much worth the wait.
Three times in Game 1 the Yankees gave away third base with poor defense, and twice it came back to bite them. In the first inning, Freeman’s double became a triple when Verdugo misplayed the ricochet off the sidewall in left field. In the fifth, Juan Soto turned Enrique Hernández’s double into a triple with a poor route in right field. Hernández then scored the game’s first run on Will Smith’s sacrifice fly.
Justin Verlander has a reputation as a big-game pitcher in the postseason — mostly based on two dominant performances against the Yankees in the 2017 ALCS. His World Series history, however, is another matter: He entered this game 0-6 with a 5.68 ERA in seven career starts. That’s the third-worst ERA among pitchers who have started at least five World Series games. Early on, however, he’s cruising: Nine up and nine down through three innings with four strikeouts, including a three-pitch strikeout of Bryce Harper when he got Harper to swing and miss at three straight fastballs at the top of the zone. — Schoenfield
Just minutes after a wilder finish than anyone could have imagined, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was on live TV trying to sum up Freddie Freeman’s game-winning grand slam in the 10th inning of World Series Game 1. Roberts came up with those five words: “Tonight, the game honored him.”
